My Vision by Simon Hannington

My vision is to reveal Gods heart to the body of Christ. To see the church taking responsibility for the underprivileged and the marginalised - meeting the needs of the poor at a grass roots level.

Matthew 25:40

"Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." (NIV)

Only in doing this can Christ can be revealed to us - while being Christ-like. All too often we pass Jesus by in our everyday life. My vision is to reveal the Christ in every man, to every man - by living our lives for Jesus, the way he taught.

My heart is to see justice performed in the hearts and lives of the marginalised and the poor. Motivated by our faith in Jesus Christ, we can serve alongside the poor and oppressed as a demonstration of God's unconditional love.

I want to see the church moving in what they believe, not looking from the outside in, but from the inside out. A church that loses the attitude that says “there’s plenty of people, someone else will do it.” Christ like radicals that get on with making a change, seeing “change” as their responsibility. Not doing out of duty but out of love, not out of pity but of compassion.

Luke 11:38-43

"The Pharisee was surprised he did not wash his hands before eating. So the Lord said to him: you Pharisees clean the outside of your cups and dishes, but on the inside you are greedy and evil You fools! Didn’t God make both the outside and the inside? If you would only give what you have to the poor everything you do would please God. You Pharisees are in for trouble! You give God a tenth of the spices from your gardens, such as mint and rue. But you cheat people and you don’t love God. You should be fair and kind to others and still love God. You Pharisees are in for trouble! You love the front seats at the meeting places, and you like to be greeted with honour in the market." (CEV)

I dream of a day when followers of Christ attend church, not to keep up with the Jones’s, but to be a part of their community. To be part of a community that connects with their surroundings, people that put into action the message of Christ, giving individuals another option, a chance of another life.

Can we be a people who are so in love with Jesus that when we read his words, we act on them like the bride with the bridegroom, so in love, that she/we will do anything. If the 'bridegroom' is 'one of the least of these' like in Matthew 25, will we not do anything for that person? So that the 'brother' experiences the love we have for Christ.

Isaiah 58: 6, 7 &10 gives very clear direction for what we should be doing.

" I tell you what it really is to worship the Lord:

  • Remove the chains of prisoners that are chained unjustly
  • Free those who are abused
  • Share your food with everyone who is hungry
  • Share your home with the poor and homeless
  • Give clothes to those in need
  • Don’t turn away your relatives
  • Give your food to the hungry and care for the homeless

Then your light will shine in the dark; your darkest hour will be like the noonday sun." (CEV)

Are we prepared to make the sacrifices?
