Emergency in Sri Lanka, Humanitarian disaster in the making

Dear Supporter

It is obvious that a humanitarian disaster is
unfolding in Sri Lanka as the Sri Lankan army
makes its final push against the Tamil Tigers.
As usual it is civilians who suffer most from war
and 200,000 people are trapped in the cross-fire.

In 2008 we raised £18,000 to help the victims of the typhoon in Burma. We would like to help the ordinary Tamil people in Sri Lanka. Our target is to send £20,000 with your help. Our partner churches in the area are well able to bring help to the civilians caught up in this war.

Thousands of ordinary people thought to be "sympathisers" have been rounded up and held in refugee/internment  camps. No foreigners or reporters are allowed in. Pastor Leslie has reported that one of his pastors is held in such a camp.

Please help us to help some of the people suffering in Sri Lanka.

Just to let you know I am out here in Sri Lanka with Leslie and Shanti Matthews. Up until a couple of weeks ago we had planned to go to Jaffna but as you can imagine that isn't going to happen. MOD have revoked all passes to the north of the island.

However, I will be going up to Vavuniya to see for myself what's happening. I arrived yesterday and it is pretty clear that things here are worse than I thought.

There are few reports coming out of the north of Island - Leslie and Shanti are very concerned for their flock as you can imagine. There have been rumours of 100s of young men and boys being shot as LTTE supporters - 1000s are being rounded up for "rehabilitation".

Many people have sought refuge at a town 7 km from Mullaithivu - these are by the looks of it being used as a human shield by the Tigers.

From "Observer" article - Sunday 15th February

In a corridor of land in north east Sri Lanka, some 200,000 civilians are trapped between government forces and Tamil rebels. By one estimate, 40 people are being killed every day. A 30-year civil war is entering a decisive and atrocious phase. Intervention is essential to avert a humanitarian catastrophe.

A recent military surge has seen the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam effectively besieged. Fired by the prospect of eradicating the insurgency once and for all, the army is waging a war with no regard for civilian lives. They are also trying to operate without witnesses, refusing access to foreign observers and journalists. Last week, Sri Lankan authorities rejected the appointment of a British government envoy to the region as interference in their internal affairs. That line is easily deployed against the former colonial power; it would be less effective against the combined voice of the UN.

The Tigers, meanwhile, also have a brutal reputation, using civilians as human shields and recruiting by coercion. But the government's latest response is sinister - setting up internment camps to "rehabilitate" Tamils caught up in the conflict. Neither side can be trusted to guarantee the safety of civilians.

The Security Council must demand a ceasefire so that refugees can be evacuated. The secretary general should mandate a humanitarian mission to investigate the internment camps.

The Sri Lankan government must not be allowed the secrecy it craves to conduct a war against its own people.
