Frequently Asked Questions about donating on-line and Gift Aid

How safe is it to use my credit card to make a donation?

We us Worldpay.com to make credit card donations. When you click on the 'Complete Donation' button you enter a secure web page to enter your credit card details. This is indicated by the picture of a lock appearing and the web address starting with 'HTTPS'. Your credit card details are then securely encrypted.       <Back to top>

Which currencies may I donate in?

We currently accept payments in Pounds, Euros or US dollars. The amount will be converted at the prevailing rate and so we will always receive your gift in pounds.     <Back to top>

Can I designate my gift to a specific project or appeal?

You certainly can. We actively encourage you to support s specific project. Both your gift and any applicable tax relief will go to the restricted fund you have selected.

Alternatively you can give to the "where needed most" fund which gives us the freedom to allocate the donation according to the needs.        <Back to top>

If I change my mind, will you make a refund of my donation?

If you have ticked the gift aid box, for legal reasons we cannot promise to refund the donation. However we recognise that making a donation over the internet is by nature spontaneous. If you feel that the donation was a mistake please, let us now within 7 days and we will deal with your request sympathetically.      <Back to top>

What is Gift Aid?

The Gift Aid system started in April 2000 and meant that it is possible for us to reclaim income tax on all donations, regular or one-off, large or small. In effect you are designating a part of your income to Kingscare. As a charity, we are not liable to pay income so we can reclaim the tax you have already paid on the gift.

Using Gift Aid means that for every pound you give, we get an extra 28 pence (25 pence from April 2008) from the Inland Revenue, helping your donation go further.

This means that £100 can be turned into £125, just so long as donations are made through Gift Aid. Imagine what a difference that could make, and it doesn’t cost you a thing.      <Back to top>

How do I know if I’m a UK tax payer?

You are a UK Income Tax payer if:

  • Tax is taken from your wages or salary before you receive your pay
  • You pay tax under self-assessment
  • You have any taxable savings (in a Building Society, for instance) or investment income
  • If you have recently paid any Capital Gains Tax, or expect to pay it in the near future. This could be on the sale of a property or some shares, for example.

If any of these apply to you, please complete and tick the gift aid box.

Please note: Inheritance Tax does not count as UK Income.      <Back to top>

What if I don’t pay UK tax?

Please do not tick the gift aid box. If, in the future, you no longer pay UK income or capital gains tax, please let Kingscare know.       <Back to top>

What if I’m a pensioner?

You may still pay tax on a private pension plan or a savings account, or pay Capital Gains Tax if you sell property or shares. If so, please tick the gift aid box.       <Back to top>

What if I’m a higher rate tax payer?

As a higher-rate taxpayer you have the right to reclaim tax on your donations. This will be on the difference between the high rate and the standard rate. All you have to do is remember to include details of your charitable gifts on your self-assessment tax form to claim your additional personal tax relief.       <Back to top>

What if I’m a lower rate tax payer?

If you pay a lower rate (10% or 20%), Kingscare can still claim tax back, provided you pay enough tax to cover the claim in the tax year you make the gift(s). If you are not sure please ask us for help.       <Back to top>

>How will this affect my existing Covenants?

You can continue making any gifts you currently donate by Covenant in the normal way and we can reclaim tax on them. However, your Covenant doesn’t apply to any additional donations you might make - so if you haven't made a gift aid declaration Kingscare will be losing out on the chance to reclaim tax if you decide to make an additional donation in the future.

Making a Gift Aid declaration is like simply extending your Covenant to cover any increase in your regular gift or any additional donations you might ever make.       <Back to top>

If I make a Gift Aid declaration does that commit me to giving money?

Absolutely not. It just means that any gift you’ve already given to Kingscare (since April 2000 or the last 6 years) and any gifts you may give in future are covered by the declaration.

For your reassurance: If you want Kingscare to STOP reclaiming the tax on your donations, you can withdraw your permission at any time. To do this, simply phone, email or write to Kingscare.       <Back to top>

I wish to make a regular donation?

Regular donations are our life-blood. They enable us to make regular commitments to our overseas partners.

Note that bankers order forms are only valid through a UK bank.

It is not yet possible for us to take your instructions on-line. But you can download a Pdf of bankers order form , print it out, fill it in and post it to us.     <Back to top>

I am a United States Taxpayer - What can I do?

As a UK charity we cannot issue tax receipts valid in the USA.

But you can donate to Kingscare through CafAmerica and get a tax-deductible receipt. Click on the RED donate now button.

If tax receipts are not important to you you can still make a credit card payment in dollars on our web-site.

Regular donations are still possible if you are willing to give us your instructions and credit card information.       <Back to top>
